Elks Lodge

In another of our continuing series of buildings that don't exist anymore- the Elks Lodge 676 on Mill Street, back before the builiding of the marina and the housing units.

Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) 676 was formed in Menasha in 1901 and after this site was demolished, moved its headquarters to Nicolet Boulevard near Seton Middle School.

  2. We spent many a Friday night in the 60’s here. We watched the Flintstones and Wild Wild West on tv while the adults socialized in the bar. If we wandered into the bar and asked politely we could get A Shirley Temple to drink. Next was a fish fry for dinner. After that the adults started dancing. I remember doing the twist to Chubby Checker and asking the piano player to play “kitten on the keys”. It was the only song I knew the name of.
One evening there was a sled parked outside with a whole fleet of Alaskan Malamutes harnessed up just like you would see in Alaska. it was parked on the side of the street parallel to the water. The lead dog was blind in one eye. Ah the memories.
