We all played on the cannons as kids and most of us never gave a thought as to where they came from or why they were there. After reading the above article, it looks as if we're no closer to answering those questions. I'm more intrigued as to how Menasha could be spelled three different ways in the article.
From the Neenah Gazette May 10, 1873: Menasha keeps a large howitzer in position at the upper canal bridge, commanding the North Channel and the lower end of the lake. Any attempt to feloniously steal the river improvement will be opposed by every resource of barbarous force.
ReplyDeleteI've always wondered about the cannon in Riverside Park and have taken many photos of it over the years...but I'm also fascinated by the "Disc Jockey to talk about 'Pop' Music article." Did he play some records backwards to decode the meanings of some current popular songs? That was often done to demonize 'pop' music at the time, including to "prove" that Paul McCartney was dead. I wish I could have attended that Kiwanis meeting!
