Early St. Mary's

St. Mary's Catholic Grade School from 1898

This school building in the foreground was built in 1893 by then pastor, Reverend Andrew Schubert for $15,000.  It supplemented the original school built in 1868.  The St. Mary centennial booklet from 1967 tells us the school was "situated close to the Second Street curbing, just east of the walk leading to the (present) high school site."

  1. I think that the '67 book must have meant that the location of the first school built by the parish was "situated close to the Second Street curbing, just east of the walk leading to the (present) high school site." The building pictured above was closer to Third St., and was actually incorporated into the 1920's school building (that later was the H.S. building. If you looked closely from the rectory, you could discern the profile in the brickwork. Also, the foundation was different in that part of the structure. This picture would have been taken from Second St. looking north with the church not quite visible on the right. At the time of this picture, the original church bell from the first (burned) church would have been on a structure between the school and church.
