Big Oops

March 27, 1884, Saturday Evening Press

My sympathies to Mr. Reuter for the accident he endured on the rail line.  Parenthetically, I've always been amazed at the journalism of this era, so focused on the gory details of the injuries incurred by the accident victim(s).  I'm glad we have better sensibilities about such topics these days.

  1. Do we truly have better sensibilities, or do we simply have privacy laws that forbid publication of such details? Even as recently as the 1970s and 1980s our local newspapers described incidents/accidents in great detail and named those involved (even children!). Heck, even the home addresses of those involved were generally part of the news story.

  2. You're right, Kris. No one would publish exact street addresses again in print.
