What better way to get new teachers acquainted with the area than to give them an overview of the history of the city. Even if these were not history teachers, an understanding of where we came from is always beneficial. For as the old adage goes, “Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it."
As was typical of the era, married women were always identified by their husbands' names, as if the women did not have their own first names... I always find that interesting.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about anyone else, but in going through school in Menasha, I learned more about Jamestown and Plymouth Rock than I ever learned about local history. I'm not sure if the teachers didn't know it themselves, they weren't interested in it, local history wasn't in the approved curriculum, or what. I learned very little of local history until I became an adult and moved away from the area. A real shame and a sad missed opportunity.
ReplyDeleteKris, I almost commented in a similar way, but I think I might have gone down that road before. In 1965, these women could not have even gotten a credit card without their husband signing, too. Having raised two (now adult) daughters, I am so happy for them that they have opportunities that these women did not have.
