June 14, 1968, Neenah-Menasha Daily Northwestern
Printed on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of The Northwestern comes this article about a dream some had about a waterway linking Green Bay to the Mississippi. At the end, all this shows is that there is always a precedent for throwing good money after bad, especially when ill-informed people jump on the bandwagon.
The first money that I know of for the "Improvement" was spent in 1839. In 1847 and 1849, more money was invested. Improvement news made the local newspapers nearly every year from 1854 through 1882. The 1870s were they heydays. By 1878, 3 million had been spent and it was deemed that 20 million would almost be sufficient. If it were not for trains, the money pit would probably have been kept open for a longer period.
