Pictured above is the Badger Highways quarry located between 9th Street and Airport Road. It had been used by Badger Highways since 1947, when the company moved to Menasha from Oshkosh. Quarrying operations were halted at this location in 1979 due to the residential growth around its location. Materials are now hauled in from Badger’s operating quarry located in the Town of Center in Outagamie County, north of Appleton. But Badger Highways' main office, shop, and equipment yard are still located at the original Menasha site.

Any idea what year this picture was taken?
ReplyDeleteIt had to be after Gegan School was built. That's in the picture. My grandma always warned me not to ride my bike to that neighborhood because she feared me falling in the quarry. We lived on Dunning. If Badger Highways still operates from here they must also have a yard just behind Appleton road maybe off if 9th. I see trucks there all the time.
ReplyDeleteWhen I ran Cross Country at Menasha HS about 1970, Coach Jack "Orangy" Vanden Boogaard decided that we needed to run hills to prepare us for competition. If you think about it, there aren't a lot of serious hills close to Menasha. So, several times he arranged for us to run up and down the Badger Highways quarry. We hated running on those rocky, rough roads and the guys operating the heavy quarrying equipment hated us being in their way.
