Danger Dam

 June 8, 1970, Neenah-Menasha Daily Northwestern
In spite of all the joking over the years about the "Danger Dam" sign and how that's the dam's name, following along with the captions of these photographs tells enough of a sobering story to really justify the need for that sign.  I'm sure all the principals involved in this incident would agree with that assessment after their ordeal.

Tot Lot

June 26, 1972, Twin City News-Record

I'm sure every kid below the age of 10 wanted to be a firefighter after this demonstration.  And especially if and when they were allowed to climb on to the fire truck.

Conversion

June 26, 1959, Appleton Post-Crescent

Workmen move diligently in the summer of 1960 to get Butte des Morts ready to serve as a junior high school in the upcoming school year.  As times change, so do the needs of the school district.  Today, Butte des Morts is once again an elementary school.

Gimme that Money

June 19, 1957, Oshkosh Northwestern

Along the lines of no good deed goes unpunished, one of John Strange's heirs (with the same name, mind you), after grousing for 29 years about a provision in his will, finally wins a judgement to get that money.   The senior Mr. Strange had all the best intentions towards his home town, but evidently something was lost in ensuring there was adequate management of the funds set aside to help beautify Menasha.  No pun intended, but this is one of the strangest anecdotes about Menasha I have seen.

Hot Water

 June 26, 1967, Twin City News-Record

Our favorite plumber pictured above has a wrench that's almost as big as he is.  That's some plumbing job, but Drucks can fix it!  And do people say they're in "hot water" anymore?   I get the pun, but wonder how many younger people might.

Sure to Please

June 19, 1964, Twin City News-Record

Just a quick reminder that Fathers Day is coming up very, very soon.  Dads in 1964 had the luck to expect a Choco-Lotta Cake, perhaps, thanks to Best Bakery.  It's something nice for your "very important pop!"

I'll be taking the next week off from the blog, so have a great week and see you soon!

Twins

June 21, 1967, Neenah-Menasha Daily Northwestern
Can you imagine a scenario where time zone considerations made something like this happen in our Twin Cities?  To have one city on one time and the other being one hour later?  It's no wonder Menominee "took itself out" of Michigan as a whole in order to synch with Marinette, its twin.
