Labor Day Weekend

August 31, 1961, Appleton Post-Crescent

Now here's a handyman project to begin on a long Labor Day weekend- building a fallout shelter for the family!  And what better place to get ideas than the display in the Valley Fair center court.

But all kidding aside, this was an era when the "bomb" was a major worry for Americans- Berlin Wall, Russian aggression, Bay of Pigs.  School kids were doing the duck and cover drill under their desks.  Do these sound familiar?  Everyone was on edge in fear of a nuclear holocaust.

  1. Recall the homeowners in Neenah who discovered a fully stocked bomb shelter in their backyard:

  2. I had a bomb shelter in my basement in Kimberly until I sold the house 4 years ago.
