"Fun" With Menasha

October 17, 1896, Neenah Times

Our neighbors to the south often times had big fun with our fair city in the pages of their daily newspaper as evidenced by this column of "local jottings."  Aside from the insults about Menasha's streets and the jibe about the "good girl to iron," I'm surprised there wasn't more about that barber issuing a punch card to get ten shaves and a haircut for a dollar.  Seems to me, in a time when railroads and trolley cars were so prominent, the editor missed a great chance to include a jab about the barber having a need to hire a conductor to make order of it all.

Of course, I've no doubt that the roles were reversed at times for the Menasha papers vs. the Neenah side of things.  Unfortunately, I don't have access to Menasha papers for this time period so any rebuttal to the "charges" by Menasha's fourth estate must be postponed for a further time down the road.

  1. A disgrace to civilization? Oh my! Sounds like South Commercial Street in Neenah these days!
