On Occasion, Baking Can Get Tiresome....

January 28, 1966, Twin City News-Record
A block from my house, and right across from St. Mary's, Best was a part of the lives of all St. Mary's students as it became the default hangout for the smokers and anybody else who was trying to ditch school or forget about it for a little while.  Despite that, it WAS the best bakery in town, no pun intended!   We first met Best Bakery in the blog in 2012:   http://menashabook.blogspot.com/2012/11/best-bakery.html

  1. In the late 1960s, my childhood friend Peter Pazzora's (sic?) mother owned or ran a bakery in Menesha. I think it was downtown. Peter, his sister Andrea, and their mother lived at the intersection of Appleton Road and Depere street, in the house with the concrete column in the front yard. The concrete structure is to stop vehicles that miss the curve from hitting the house.

    1. I remember driving by that house all the time and not envying the folks who lived inside, just because of that curve. Didn't know that was Pete's house; I think he might have been in my kindergarten at Jefferson, or early grades at St. Mary's.

    2. Dave, I think you are talking about the Pyszora family who operated a bakery near the intersection of Racine and Main Streets in downtown Menasha. I don't remember the exact street it was on because one usually parked behind the place and entered it from the alley off Broad Street. My family thought that Best Bakery produced better products, but others might disagree. The Pyszora's son Ron was a baker in the family business, but I think he later became a baker at the SuperValu on Milwaukee Street.

  2. Thanks for the clarification. I didn't know Pete Pyszora had a brother. Pete was about 12 or 13 in 1969, so maybe his brother was much older. As David Galassie mentioned above, I believe Pete attended St. Mary's school. The Pyszora's back yard almost abutted our friend "Bozo" Paveletzke's yard on 6th street. In hindsight, that area bounded by 6th, 7th, Depere streets and Appleton road had more than enough action/trouble to keep any boy happy and occupied.
