Picnic Fun

At the blog, we're all about fun and what more wholesome fun could be had in 1972 Menasha than a major tug-of-war contest between moms and daughters at a Jefferson Park picnic?
Interesting that the Moms are referred to as their husbands' wives, such as Mrs. James Pfankuch rather than Betty Pfankuch. I wonder if that was considered correct usage according to the AP Style Guide in 1972 or simply a means to differentiate the Moms from the kids.
