1000 Yarders

February 21, 1965, Appleton Post-Crescent
I remember only too well when this was a thing in our hometown.  For 14 years, this banquet honored the NFL's leading rushers until the season was lengthened and 1000 yard rushers became too commonplace.  Furthermore, it was deemed too expensive to pay for getting everyone together.  Despite the Packers connection, I can only wonder what players from big urban locales like Chicago and Philly thought of coming to lil' ol' Menasha.

  1. I loved this gathering. The players would march in a parade down Milwaukee street sign their cards for the kids and talk friendly . Playing for the 1000 yarders in 8th grade and having Cyclone McClone for a coach was an added thrill. I won a 1966 Super Bowl Champion Packer autograph football from the St Mary's raffle which Mr McClone so kindly donated because of his connection with Fuzzy and the 1000 yarders. Thanks Mc Clone family

  2. That's the kind of momento that stays in the family forever. Make sure you document the provenance, along with all of your memories to keep with that football. Your descendants and their friends will be grateful.
