Bring Home Something Good from Best

May 5, 1971, Appleton Post-Crescent
It's a week of Mothers' Day specials for area merchants what with the special day approaching in a few short days.  We first met Best Bakery in 2012: http://menashabook.blogspot.com/2012/11/best-bakery.html

What a wonderful memory today's blog awakened. Hanging out at Best Bakery first thing each morning was a feature of most St. Mary high school days in the late 1950s. We guys assembled there before mandatory daily mass, had a donut, hung out and talk tough. Sometime we would join our classmates as they entered church at 8:00 ... and sometimes we wouldn't. When the presence of the gang became problematic for his other customers Dennis opened up a small room next door with booths and a jukebox. It was packed before (and during) mass and after school as well. It became known as "The Hole." I distinctly recall that filled donuts sold for 4 cents each! On the down side The Hole is also where many of us learned to smoke.
