George Banta, Jr. gave his fellow Rotarians a short history of Menasha newspapers in this 1931 talk. Oh, to be in the audience, listening to this and rubbing elbows with the many Menasha notables that must have been in attendance. Imagine the history these guys could relate.
Edgar Morehouse also took over Jere Crowley’s postmaster appointment in 1853. Crowley later became assistant Attorney General for Wisconsin.

J. N. Stone ran many different newspapers over the years. He was a Democrat, Republican and Independent depending on the stance of competitive newspapers. He was almost always feuding with some editor or political official. Stone was a Captain in the Civil War before giving up his commission.
W. G. Ritch, of the Winnebago County Press, was elected to the Wisconsin Senate in 1867 and was later appointed Secretary of New Mexico in 1873 and became the acting Governor in 1876. Ritch was a commissioned 1st Lieutenant and also moved up to act as Adjutant during the war.
