Champions Again
August 27, 1940, Appleton Post-Crescent
As we close out a week featuring champions of various sorts, we applaud the victorious First Ward Reds, winners in the Menasha Junior Baseball League. Such stoic faces for a happy occasion.
For "Juniors" they look so old. But juniors of that hard era were so mature in many ways. It is hard to imagine that each ward could field a team. I note that the bill of each cap is carefully curved, not the dorky flat bill so prevalent today. One of those guys is the catcher and as this is a posed photo wore his cap properly. In my Little League days of the early 1950s the catcher was the only one permitted to wear his cap backwards in public. Jim Krahenbuhl
