Band Tournament 1931

We first encountered this major event for the city back in a 2012 blog post: http://menashabook.blogspot.com/2012/05/1931-marchers.html.  At that time we featured Menasha High's band coming down Main Street.  Here is a photo of another unidentified band.  Still, one gets a sense of excitement that must have permeated the crowd.

  1. I would bet SMHS band. It's a small group and the girls are wearing skirts.

  2. Not St. Mary's. The hats and sweaters are wrong -- they were Columbia blue with an over-seas hat. The "cadet" style uniforms with plumed shako hats would be worn starting in the mid-30's. I believe that all of the girls would have worn uniform skirts in 1931, regardless of the school.

  3. David,

There is a very informative article about Lawrence E Kraft who started the band and led it through all the award winning early years in the May 23 1965 Post Crescent. That was when Mr Kraft retired from Menasha public schools. It might make an interesting read that might be of interest to your followers.
