Governor Visits Menasha

May 16, 1927 Appleton Post-Crescent

As the winter trudges on, a weary man's attention turns to that end of Winter event- spring training baseball games (at least this weary man).  So, while entertaining the notion of an eventual Spring, let's go back some 88 years to when Menasha was enraptured with baseball (it was, after all, the national pastime) and used the upcoming season to entice a certain public official to come to town to throw out the first pitch. (Still not sure why he'd tell the adoring crowd that he hoped our opponent, Oshkosh, would win though.)

  1. If you read between the lines of the last paragraph isn't the Gov implying that he hopes there is no cheating and that a brawl doesn't break out? DePere band? Didn't MHS have one in 1927?

  2. An article (which I didn’t include here) detailing the beginning of planning for the governor’s visit stated, “ Although the governor and h!s party will be the guests of the city of Menasha, plans are that the entire Fox Valley will participate in receiving the state executive.” So, I took that to mean that the band was DePere’s contribution to the event. Later in the article, it says that the welcoming party will consist of the Menasha mayor, the Oshkosh mayor, the Oshkosh District Attorney, and the county sheriff. Sorry for the confusion.
