Fishing Shanties

A 1959 wire service photo showing fishing shanties along Little Lake Butte des Morts.  I like the captioned comments about it being too cold.

  1. I wonder just where this is. The building in the background reminds Mr of Butte does Morts school. But the caption mentions Neenah. Brrrr...

  2. The shot has the old Menasha Pulley Works in the center behind my wife's house on Fredrick St. Butte Des Morts school on Tayco St is on the upper right. It must have been a cold year for that many shacks on the "Little Lake." I don't recall sturgeon fishing on Lake Butte Des Morts. The Big lake, Lake Winnebago was where these monsters lurked.

    1. Once I rode past Butte des morts school on city bus yesterday I knew that this picture was of that. Like how barren the north of the picture is. Lots of farmland back then. And early high school days.

  4. Before the Tissue Mills expanded driving onto the lake at the end of First Street and getting bait at Fahrenkrug's(sp?) was a fun wintertime event. I'm not sure when the water from the mill made this impossible, but I do remember it well.
